I knew a girl in highschool named Allison. Senior year, I sat next to her in my third period math class, which we both struggled with. Instead of focusing on the lesson or doing our work, we’d sit and talk the entire hour about relatively pointless subjects, such as whether math was definite or theoretical or why we hated everybody.
One day, as we were discussing films, I mentioned that I wanted to do something nice for our film studies teacher, who had been nothing short of spectacular. I explained to her this complex plan of contacting Roger Ebert (a well-know and respected film critic, whom our teacher greatly admired) and obtaining a letter from him to give to our teacher in thanks. Although nothing ever came of this plan, Allison listened and, when I was finished, asked me if I had ever seen the movie Amelie. I replied that no, I hadn’t, and asked why.
“Because,” she said, “you remind me a lot of her.”
After watching this movie, I have to admit that that was one of the greatest compliments I’ve ever received.
So touching, this loveliest of personal recollections in response to a wonderful film :)
